After the Civil War (1861-1865), ice was used to refrigerate freight cars and also started to be used in houses. Even prior to 1880, half the ice which had been sold in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and one third of that sold in Boston and Chicago was for household use. Because a new household convenience item, ice box that was kind of an initial modern refrigerator, was invented, this had become possible.
